TT02 - Technical Tour: Monuments & Memorials of DC

Explore Washington's most iconic landmarks through a design focused tour of the National Mall. Take in the towering Washington Monument, sobering Vietnam Wall and awe inspiring Lincoln Memorial while learning about the designers and politicians that helped shape this monumental core of the Capital. Hear stories of the history, heroes, and hopes of the United States on a stroll through the heart of Washington DC! 

The sights will include:
•Washington Monument
•The White House
•Vietnam Veteran's Memorial
•Korean War Veterans Memorial
•Lincoln Memorial
•National WWII Memorial and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial (where David Metzger, FCSI, Member Emeritus, CDT, FAIA, SCIP, will share his experience writing specifications for these two memorials)

Upon completion of this tour, participants will be able to:
• Describe the history of the iconic monuments and memorials in the DC Area
• Identify some of the designers who helped shape the monumental core of the Capital
• Discuss the design and construction of the memorials, including material selection
• Recognize what goes into writing specifications for a national memorial project


Tour Leaders: Guide from DC Design Tours and David Metzger, FCSI, Member Emeritus, CDT, FAIA, SCIP

Tour includes transportation from the Gaylord to the tour location and back.  Bus departs PROMPTLY at 1:00pm.  Be sure to check-in for the tour in the Maryland Ballroom C Lobby no later than 12:55pm.  Bus will return to the Gaylord at 4:00pm after the tour, arriving at the Gaylord at approximately 4:45pm (depending on traffic).
